The Concept.
Hikari means light in Japanese, and light, at its best, doesn't overwhelm. It reveals. It clarifies. It shows you what was already there. That's the spirit we built around. Hikari House is set across 5 acres of scenic untouched Mojave desert. It is Joshua Tree's premier boutique, fully off-grid retreat, rooted in Wabi Sabi philosophy and indoor/outdoor living. Designed for guests who value the craft in the details and the gift of stillness, it is both a refuge and a muse, where the elegance of modern architecture meets the quiet poetry of the desert. This land holds what the modern world forgets: stillness is not empty. It is full of everything we are usually too busy to appreciate.
Powered by the desert sun through a robust solar and backup battery system, Hikari House delivers modern ease through renewable energy that feels seamlessly connected to its surroundings. Expansive glass and our signature 20-foot bifold opening dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, revealing 360° sight lines that frame the landscape like breathing art. Our heatable pool rests quietly under the desert sky, as our ancient olive trees beyond set the scene for a dining table that feels fit for a European countryside dinner. Copper Mountain commands the horizon to the front, and Joshua Tree's ancient boulders reclaim the back. Set perfectly between them, Hikari House becomes part of a sacred, otherworldly silence.
Inside, warm, tactile finishes and sun-washed tones bathe the walls in an elemental warmth that mirrors the desert’s palette and presence, elevated by curated touches throughout, from artisan-crafted details and elevated everyday essentials to design-forward furnishings chosen for comfort, elegance, and function. Meanwhile, Shou Sugi Ban wraps the exterior like sun-kissed armor, dramatic and enduring, echoing the landscape’s raw presence. Every element offers a serene, curated space for rest, reflection, and reconnection.
Balance is intentional. Here at Hikari House, you’ll find everything you need for an elevated stay, while remaining free from overwhelming, amenity-driven distractions that pull attention away from what matters most. Here, we let nature take center stage. This is not a copy-and-paste stay. It is a retreat with a point of view.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Hikari House is true high desert, so you may occasionally see desert wildlife (insects, small lizards, spiders, scorpions, and, more rarely, snakes). We work with local pest control, but we recommend closed-toe shoes outdoors, especially after dark, and extra care around covered areas like rocks and patio furniture. Be mindful of open doors, and if anything concerning gets inside, let us know right away and we will help address it.
The property is not childproofed and may include hazards (pool, patios, steps, uneven or raised surfaces, and hanging chairs with a drop behind them). If you have children or babies, never leave them unattended as this can result in children drowning or being seriously injured if not supervised.
Hikari House is proud to be fully off-grid, designed to minimize our footprint and live in harmony with the desert landscape. The home is powered by a high-capacity solar system with three large batteries, and an additional propane backup generator to recharge the system when needed. To help conserve energy and reduce unnecessary generator use, we kindly ask guests to be mindful of large appliance use after sunset.
Please be kind to the home and its contents. All items were thoughtfully sourced to curate a unique space for all and are not easy to replace. We ask that you treat everything with the same care you would in your own space, and that all house items remain at Hikari House for future guests to enjoy.
Heating the pool is available for an additional fee of $100 per day. Please notify your host in advance if you’d like to use the pool as it takes approximately 4+ hours to fully heat up.
All photoshoots must be approved beforehand. We have a separate fee for photoshoots, please contact us at Hikarihousejt@gmail.com
